Cheap Desktop Computers Vs Cheap Laptops

Computers have become a way of life and almost every household has at least one. Kids need them for their homework, families use them to stay in touch, and professionals need their electronic devices for their business. If you do not have a computer, you pretty much have become an anomaly.

Computers come in many shapes, sizes, colors and brands. Some are very expensive, while others are more affordable. The two main categories are desktops and laptops. The first one is stationary, while laptops are smaller, lightweight and can be taken along.

If money is tight, yet a computer is an absolute necessity, it may be wise to thoroughly research the topic. Only when you understand the major differences between cheap desktop computers and inexpensive laptops, will you be able to make an informed decision.

Advantages of discounted laptops

• They are portable and can be moved easily from one location to another - you can even take them with you to school, work, on the bus, the airport, an Internet cafĂ©, etc.

• Laptops take up less space, which makes them easier to store.

• They are less heavy than cheap desktop computers.

• You can hide them to protect them from praying eyes or thieves.

• Because a laptop has a battery you can still use your computer for a while when there is a power outage - as long as your battery is charged.

• Older, discounted models may have fewer features than their successors, but will still work just as well.

Disadvantages of discounted laptops

• They typically cost more than a desktop.

• Upgrading and repairing them is more difficult.

• Thieves can get their hands on them more easily.

• Usually have smaller hard drives, less memory and slower CPU

• Laptops are inherently more subject to damage than desktops.

Can afford the expense, buy one of each. You can use your laptop while mobile, and enjoy the benefits of a more powerful desktop model while at home.

Advantages of cheap desktop computers

• Full-size computers are more affordable than comparative laptops.

• Upgrading them is much simpler and less expensive.

• They are faster than comparative laptops.

• Desktops are better for playing games, multimedia, and other high intensity computing needs.

• Accessories like the keyboard, mouse and screen are easier to use.

• Stationary computers are harder to steal.

• You won't accidentally forget your desktop on the bus, train.

• It is easier to use a desktop than a laptop for extended periods of time.

• No worries about recharging batteries. As long as you have power, you are good to go.

Disadvantages of cheap desktop computers

• You cannot take a personal computer with you on the road.

• They are more bulky than cheap laptops.

When it is decision time, you will have to sit down and think about all the advantages and disadvantages listed above. In the end, which computer you choose will be a matter of personal choice, your lifestyle preferences, and how money you have budgeted for your computer needs.

Choosing and Buying a New Personal Computer

Buying a new PC can be a daunting task for some people, the average home user will not know what the different options mean and when faced with these decisions might end up making the wrong choice and end up with a computer that won't do everything they need it to do. This guide will help you understand the different options so you can choose the correct PC that meets your needs to ensure you are getting the best value for your hard earned money.

Before you start shopping for a new computer you need to make a few decisions to help you find the right computer suitable for your needs.

1. Determine if you want a laptop or desktop computer. See Laptops vs Desktops further down for more information.
2. Create a list all the different things you want to be able to do with your new computer - for example, browsing the internet, sending/receiving emails, word processing and storing photos, videos and music. Without this list you will find it very hard to determine which computer will be suitable for you.
3. Determine the minimum hardware specifications for your new computer, see Hardware Specifications further down for more information.
4. Determine how you are going to buy your new computer. See Where To Buy A Personal Computer further down for more information.
5. Buy your new computer. Keep an eye out for my up coming guide "Setting Up A Personal Computer", which will cover the basics of setting up your computer and maintenance tasks you should do on a regular basis to keep your computer running fast and secure.

Laptops vs Desktops
A laptop computer has a major benefit over a desktop computer, portability - you can take your laptop with you almost anywhere meaning you will have instant access to the information stored on your laptop, however this also makes it easier for someone to walk off with your laptop and your information. Desktops are not portable, but are also a lot less likely to be stolen.

A laptop is generally much more expensive than a desktop computer, and, for the same cost of a laptop, a faster desktop could be purchased.

Laptops are generally not upgradeable and are made using proprietary parts, this means that if your laptops breaks only the manufacturer of your laptop can supply parts to fix it - when your warranty runs out this can become very expensive. Desktops are fully upgradeable and do not use proprietary parts, meaning that the replacement parts are normally inexpensive and can be found in practically any computer store.

Hardware Specifications
There are a lot of different options when it comes to the hardware specifications of a computer, once you have made your list of things you want to do with your computer you will be able to determine the minimum hardware specifications of your new computer, normally the best way to do this is to talk to a specialist and give them your list of things you want to do with your computer. The main hardware components you need to look at are the CPU (processor), RAM (memory) and HDD (hard drive).

Processor - Determines how fast your computer can process information.

RAM - This is the temporary space the computer uses when accessing your programs and information stored on your computer. This can be thought of as a desk, the information you are currently working on is put on the desk and is removed when you are finished. The more RAM your computer has, the more information you can access quickly at the same time.

HDD - Determines how much information you can store on your computer.

For basic tasks, such as browsing the internet, sending/receiving emails, word processing and storing photos, videos and music, a computer with at least a dual-core processor, 2GB memory and an 80GB hard drive would be suitable, depending on how many photos, videos and music files you have - the hard drive capacity might need to be increased.

For more advanced tasks such as gaming you will need to look at a fast processor, more memory and a separate graphics card - refer to the minimum specifications for some of the games you would like to play to get an idea on the sort of hardware specifications you will need.

Where to Buy a Personal Computer
There are a few different ways to buy a new computer, below is a list of the most common ways people buy computers.

1. Buying a computer form an electronics store or department store (such as Dick Smiths or Big W in Australia). This is possibly the most common way the average user will buy a PC and is also the worst way to purchase a computer. These types of stores generally do not have staff with a good knowledge of computers, therefore they cannot really help you make the right choice and cannot offer good after purchase support. Avoid this option where possible.
2. Buying a brand name computer from a manufacturer over the internet (such as Dell or HP). This is a relatively good option however you cannot look at, apart from pictures, or test drive the computer before buying it. You can normally get good advice when buying online by calling the sales team or searching for reviews on the internet. After market support is reasonably good with this option, they will have a dedicated technical enquiry team and will normally have a local service representative who will normally do house calls.
3. Buying a custom built computer from a computer store (such as Principal Computers in Australia). This is a good option and will allow you to get great advice and buy a computer that fits your needs. You can sit down with a specialist and discuss exactly what you need your computer to do, it is also generally cheaper than buying a brand name computer and they will provide great after purchase support.
4. Buying the individual hardware components and building the computer yourself, this is only a good option for those who already have good knowledge of computers. If this option interests you please look out for my up coming guide "Building Your Own Personal Computer".

Conclusion
With the right information, choosing and buying a personal computer does not have to be a daunting task. Hopefully this guide will help you in the right direction of choosing a computer that will be suitable for your needs. Please feel free to leave any comments or questions you may have.

Laptop Accessories - Choosing a Wireless Mouse

Although laptops are facing some fierce competition with tablet devices, the laptop is a device that is still needed and desired by many techies and professionals. Many newer model laptops come equipped with features such as bluetooth. One accessory most laptop users can not do without is the mouse. Touch pads are of great use, but the mouse is the input device that will allow you to play games and use many programs with precision and control not offered by your built-in touch pad.

Wireless input devices such as mice offers more flexibility over your wired mouse because you don't have to get frustrated with the wire getting in your way or entangled with items or your desk. Wrapping up the mouse cord can be another annoying feature of these wired mice. For those dedicated users of technology who are using a late-model laptop, you can still enjoy the use of a mouse without the wires. In my experience, I prefer Logitech or Kensington wireless mice. When choosing to go without the wires on a mouse, I would avoid using those mice defined as micro. These small devices can be somewhat frustrating to use if you have medium to large size hands, If your hands are small or the device is for a child, then a micro wireless mouse would make sense.

Many vendors have wireless mice with micro receivers, these are a great investment because these small receivers will fit nearly flush with side of the laptop while plugged into the USB port. You can leave these micro receivers plugged into your laptop and your wireless mouse will reconnect when your laptop is powered on. When choosing your new wireless mouse for your new or older model laptop, I would recommend choosing a device that offers the micro receiver.

Remember to select a wireless mouse that feels comfortable in your hands and one that will shut off automatically when not in use for an extended period.

AIP SSC-5 Vs AIP SSM-10

Reviewing some more networking equipment. Both run Cisco's well reknown adaptive security appliance, The AIP SSC-5 and the AIP SSM-10. These are 2 slightly differently built items, but have the same sake. Rapidly deployable, and easily manageable they enable small businesses, branch offices and enterprise teleworker environments to minimize operation costs. All come with functions like firewall protection, intrusion prevention, antivirus, worm scanning, malware protection.

The SSM-10 is rack-mountable, while the cheaper SSC-5 is an external hardware. The SSC-5 has a total of 1 expansion slots, and an Intel Celeron 1.60 GHz processor, 256 mega of installed RAM, 64 MB of flash memory, the firewall's throughput is 150 Mbps, while VPN throughput is 100 Mbps, can handle 10 IPSec VPN peers and 2 SSL VPN peers. Confronted with the SSM-10's features, the SSC-5 seems puny. While having the same amount of flash memory, and RAM, the SSM-10 can handle 50 IPSec VPN peers, and 50 Web VPN peers, runs 6k concurrent sessions (32k in virtualization).

These excellent items might non function through time, in that case, I don't recommend buying new ones, instead send them to get repaired, or at least buy used ones. Dominating prices lead to a certainly under-estimated second hand market, which still has to show us it's true potential.

After all, if it's checked, you got to consider this is not something you wear, and should be seen, instead, a repaired unit will function the same way as a new one does. Save the planet!

Acer Aspire One D255

Let’s take a close look under the hood of Acer Aspire One D255 netbook. What makes this new model special? Well, it’s one of the few 10″ models with dual core 1.5GHz Intel Atom N550 processor. Now, this makes it special!! This laptop is about 15% more efficient than single core netbook. Battery still lasts up to 8 hours. Last pro we mention is that it can handle 720p HD Flash video nicely. In some parts of the world this netbook is offered with Android dual boot option but not here in states.

Now, let’s take a look at cons. Acer Aspire One D255 screams under pressure of HD QuickTime files and the cursor doesn’t respond well to the touchpad.

Acer Aspire One D255 will cost you about $349. Similar machine we should mention is Acer Aspire One 521 for about the same money, but with significantly better CPU and graphics performance, but you won’t get 8 hours on a charge. Maybe 5 tops.

Nanowire Batteries - The Most Exciting Technological Advancement In Recent Years

For many years Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries were the only choice for users of cell phones, laptops and other electronic devices. Each Lithium-ion battery consists of two sides: the anode made of carbon, and the cathode made of metal-oxide. Charging the battery, causes lithium-ions to become positive and flow from the cathode to the anode, while an electronic circuit uses electrons to balance the charge. Discharging the battery reverses the whole process. These batteries have remained unchanged for many years.

The capacity of the battery is determined by the amount of lithium-ions that can be stored in the anode. Since anodes are currently created from carbon, the maximum capacity has been reached. Newer methods are being studied, and the most promising appears to be nanowire batteries. This research, led by Yi Cui, assistant professor, has shown that silicon has the ability to absorb ten times more energy than carbon. Unfortunately, silicon has the disadvantage of swelling dramatically when charged with energy. This creates a constant swelling and shrinking while being used. Eventually, this process causes the silicon to break.

A solution has been found by Yi Cui and his team. Making use of nanotechnology solves the problem. Creating very thin silicon wires called nanowires, turned out to be the solution. For some unknown reason, the nanowires can still expand and shrink, but they do not break like the silicon layers. Unfortunately, creating these ultra fine silicon wires are still extremely expensive. One of these wires is a thousand times thinner than a human hair. Luckily, as with all new technology, costs will drop with time.

The expected capacity of 10 times that of standard Lithium-Ion batteries have not been reached yet. So far, researchers were able to increase capacity four times. This is already excellent progress, and it shows a bright future for nanowire batteries. There is however, still one kink in the cable. The silicon wires offer a great improvement on the anode side of the battery. The cathode side still needs to be improved before the full capacity of silicon batteries can be achieved.

Those who will benefit the most are any user of an electronic device that currently uses Li-ion batteries; like iPods, laptops, cell phones, video cameras, digital cameras. The advantages do not stop with electronic devices. Especially research in electric vehicles will find great support in nanowire technology. Patents have already been filed so we ought to see improvements in battery life really soon, maybe as soon as 2012. Although there is still a long way to go and a lot of work to be done, just thinking about the possibility of running a laptop from a battery for two days makes me giddy.

How Much Storage Space Do You Need From An SD Card?

When you have a flash SD card or micro SD storage card there are various different things you can use it for. People tend though to use them for the same few select purposes which includes things like camera storage for digital cameras, mp3 players and just for transferring data between devices. A lot of people will just use one or two micro SD memory cards for this purpose and swap the data over depending on what they want to use on there - they might bring back their camera, transfer the photos over to the computer and then put their music on to listen to on their CD.

Of course to an extent the size and the type of card you need will depend on what you need it for. However, as we can confidently describe this as the main use that most people have for their SD cards, we should be able to predict how much capacity the average Joe needs for their SD card.

SD memory cards come in many different sizes and it's possible to get them as small as 128MG or as large as 64GB. A 64GB SD card then is something that will mean you can fit countless photographs on your camera, can transfer sometimes the entire contents of your computer, or can listen to your entire catalogue of albums on your MP3 player. Some people though feel that they may not need a 64GB card and might feel as though they won't be able to fill it.

When you consider the amount of data in a photograph (they are unlikely to be more than a megabyte) this means you are never likely to need even more than 2GB just for a holiday. At the same time, if you think of your CD collection, you probably don't even own 64GB worth of music. In these cases you might instead opt to go for a 32GB Micro SDHC. This will offer you half the storage but has a different advantage of being smaller and also cheaper. Others might decide to go lower still - you can get yourself a SanDisk Extreme Pro CF in a range of different capacities and that includes 16GB and lower.

However that doesn't mean you can't benefit from a larger card at all? If you have a 16GB SanDisk Extreme Pro CF then sure you will still be able to fit your whole song collection on the card. At the same time you will probably be able to take all the photos you want to on holiday. But will you be able to do both? At the same time what if you do happen to fill all of your photo slots - how frustrating would that be in the middle of a holiday? This is particularly possible if you decide you want to film video footage. Similarly you might decide you want to back up some items and still use your SD memory for filming. As such then you may be surprised at just how much space you find you do need, and even if you don't need it now, you'd probably find it to be very helpful.

What Makes Dell Monitors So Different?

When asked what makes Dell monitors so different from the competition, it is important to understand that many competitors actually use the same panels and underlying technologies. This means that the panels, the parts that generate the images users see on their screens, is often shared between Dell monitors and monitors sold by the competition. With that being the case, what is it that truly makes Dell monitors unique?

Part of the answer lies not in the actual panels that generate the images consumers see but rather lie in the exterior shells that those panels are attached to. Style is an important factor for many, and a cutting edge industrial look that is frequently updated is certainly chic by nearly any standard. This might seem unimportant at first blush, but there is a method to what appears to be nothing more than cosmetic choices.

First, the use of affordable materials paired with quality components helps keep the price and weight of products and boxing down significantly. Affordability is an easy to understand concept that almost all consumers should understand very well, but many consumer may not give as much attention to the issue of weight as they should. Weight influences the price and size of packaging, shipping and freight costs, and cost of storing and handling products and return. Lower weights make for additional savings that can be passed on to customers which is one more reason that Dell monitors are smartly designed compared to metal clad offerings from the competition.

Of particular note are the company's 30" offerings that handily demonstrate just how their affordability pays off. None of the competition can match the quality and price point of the professional grade 30" monitors simply because of the time and attention that the engineers spend designing affordable monitors paired with the fact that the company is in a position to buy in bulk quantities.

In addition to the weight of the shell on most Dell monitors there are also a few other factors that make them different than some of the competition. Despite being lighter, most Dell monitors tend to have slightly larger rear profiles that are both stylistic and functional. Larger rear profiles allow for additional ventilation and stability, both of which can potentially offer benefits to consumers. There is often also room for additional features such as onboard USB hubs at affordable prices.

Integrated USB hubs are a very useful, especially powered USB hubs that are integrated into some of the mid- and high-end Dell monitors. Since most Dell monitors place at least three or four powered USB ports within easy reach of consumers, those same computer owners are free to place their towers, desktops, netbooks, and/or laptops nearly anywhere they like. Furthermore, laptop and netbook are almost uniformly deficient in USB ports and doubly so in powered USB ports that would otherwise sap critical battery life.

Some Dell monitors are not only stylish, affordable, and pack useful features, some also feature unique panels or panels that are at least uncommon. Examples of this include the company's newer line of high pixel density 27" monitor, their combined ventures with NVIDIA to produce 3D monitors that produce cinema-grade 3D effects, and an entire top to bottom lineup of LED-backlit LCD monitors that are as gorgeous as they are power efficient. With appeal to budding digital artists, gamers, and the environmentally aware respectively, these lineups demonstrate the amazing design and business philosophies of one of the world's leading computer companies at the same time.

Data Loggers Keep Our Fruits and Vegetables Fresh

When we purchase fruits or vegetables from our local super market, we rarely stop to think about how the produce arrived there. We can guess that it was packed correctly since it appears to have arrived in good condition. We hope that the delicate produce has been labeled correctly and handled properly and that it arrived on time to avoid spoilage. Little do we know that technology, in the form of data loggers, have our best interests at hand.

Data loggers are one piece of the puzzle that ensures that the produce shipping and refrigerated freight industry components work together in a precise manner. In the U.S., shipment of temperature sensitive articles, like produce, are regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). And according to the USDA, the maximum number of days allowable for various fresh fruits and vegetables trucked to locations, is 5 days from the shipping point. For farmers growing fresh produce, data loggers provide an accurate record of humidity and temperatures experienced during the growth, preparation and transportation of their produce, thus helping to ensure its freshness and quality. Data loggers track temperatures from the moment the produce is picked to the time it is delivered to the customer or supermarket. For shippers, it is vital that conditions within the transporting vehicles are maintained within the required levels.

For ultimate freshness, there needs to be uninterrupted flow of a temperature controlled environment (cold chain) beginning at the farm, throughout the delivery, and finally to the consumer. Data loggers successfully monitor the shipping environment, duration of the shipment and critical control points throughout the process-information useful for both farmers and shippers. If the produce arrives less than perfect, the information obtained from this technology can be used as evidence in loss claims resulting from temperature excursions during shipping or storage.

BIOPAC develops, manufactures, and supports data acquisition and analysis systems for life science research and education, including data loggers and accessories. BIOPAC is used in thousands of labs worldwide.

Old software compatibility in Windows 7

We all know, almost all programs that can run on Windows XP and Vista will have no trouble if run on Windows 7. This is because Windows 7 was designed by Microsoft so that Windows users do not have to bother anymore looking for the latest version of the old software.

Even so, there is some software that runs normally on winows XP but do not go well when installed on windows 7.

If you experience this, may need to visit the website of Windows 7 Compatibility Center to find further references about the compatibility of software that you use. Other alternatives, visit the official website of the software that you use on old software availability and compatibility in Windows 7.

If you do not find the problem either from the Windows Compatibility Center official website or software, but software is still experiencing errors when run, perhaps a brief explanation below can help you solve them.

1) Use Compatibility Mode.

The first option, use the Windows XP Compatibility Mode. The trick, right click on the Short Cut software, and then click Properties. Continue to click the Compatibility tab. On the Run this program compatibility mode for, give the "check mark" in that section and select Windows XP (Service Pack that you wear). See the Properties My Computer to find out how many service packs that are used. Finally, click OK or Apply button.

2) If using Windows 7 Business or Ultimate, use the Windows Virtual PC.

Try downloading Windows Virtual PC and Windows XP Mode and then install in your notebook or desktop PC running Windows 7. That way, a Windows XP can run on Windows 7, and of course all Windows XP can run programs without having problems.

Another function of the Virtual PC, if you have 16-bit-based programs because of its function and its benefits can not be replaced by another application, Virtual PC is able to use old programs on new computers.

3) Use a Dual Boot Windows.

Dual booting can also be an option if you want to wake up with a good software compatibility. You can still use the Windows 7 and once when switching to Windows XP if the software used is not compatible and have errors.

This option is very good for who like to experiment with Windows and increase your knowledge and experience with both operating systems.

4) Replacing the old software with new software that are different but have similar functions.

Sounds like maybe not so good, because you have to familiarize first with a new program that will be installed. But when it comes to the needs and daily activities, this option is still good enough transactions are carried out.

It is also an alternative, if you do not have a lot of "the bag" to purchase a new version of software that will be used and want to replace them with cheaper yagn software. For example, you want to change their old versions of Microsoft Office with a new version but did not have enough money to buy lisensiya. Alternatively, you can use software such as "Open Office" which can be obtained free of charge. Only need an Internet connection costs to download the application to your computer.
